If you were born in Singapore in the 80's.

a facebook network i joined. thought i might share this with you guys..... this is just the stuff on the wall.. people have added in a lot more with their personal posts.

if you were born in the 80's in Singapore
Type:
Common Interest - Age
Description:
You would remember:

You grew up watching He-man, MASK, Transformers, Silver Hawk and Mickey Mouse, Ninja turtles, Carebears, Robocop, My Little Pony and Smurfs.

You grew up brushing your teeth with a mug in Primary school during recess time. You would squat by a drain with all your classmates beside you, and brush your teeth with a coloured mug.

You hated or loved the school nurse (she was either pretty or mean).

You know what SBC stands for.

You paid 40 cents for cartons of Chocolate or Strawberry milk every week in class.

Everyone's wallet used to be the velcro type

It was cool to have pagers in primary school

SBS buses used to be non-airconditioned. The bus seats are made of wood and the cushionwere red. The big red bell gave a loud BEEP! when pressed.

There were still bus tickets and bus conductors would come up to check them.

Envelopes were given to us to donate to Sharity Elephant every Children's Day.

You've probably read Young Generation magazine. You know who's Vinny the little vampire and Acai the constable.

You know what PETS are and the hidden animals in all the text pages.

You hated penmanship.Writing lines and caning hands were common, esp if you failed chinese spelling (caning was actually allowed. no shit).

You were there when they first introduced the MRT here. You went for the first ride with your parents and you would kneel on the seat to see the scenery.

Movie tickets used to cost only $3.50.

Gals were fascinated by Strawberry Short Cake and Barbie Dolls.

You learn to laugh like The Count in Sesame Street.

You bought tidbits called beebee (20 cents per pack, 10 cents in MGS), and mamee (30 cents), that had a different sticker in it every time. You carried a lunch box to school but either threw away the food or brought it back home again.

You watched TV2 (also known as Channel 10) cartoons because Channel 5 never had enough cartoons for you.

Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, The Three Investigators, Famous Five and Secret Seven were probably the thickeststory books you thought you would ever read.

KFC used to be a high class restaurant that served food in plates and had metal forks and knives. (I dont remember this, anyone?)

The most vulgar thing you said was asshole and idiot and THE MOST EXTREME WAS 'chicken pie'...you just couldn't bring yourself to say the hokkien translation.

Catching and pepsi-cola was the IN thing, and twist was themagic word.

Your English workbooks were made of some damn poor quality paper that was smooth and yellow.

You came to school 15 mins before the bell every morning just so you could copy someone's homework.

CDIS was your best friend.

The only computer lessons in school involved funny pixellized characters in 16 colours walking about trying to teach you math.

Waterbottles were slung around your neck and a must everywhere you went.

Boys loved to play soccer with small stones or tennis balls in the basketball court.Girls played five stones and boys played with marbles.

Science was fun with the Balsam and the Angsana being the most important plants of our lives, guppies and swordtail being the most important fishes.

Who can forget Ahmad, Bala, Sumei and John, immortalized in our minds from school textbooks.

We conducted experiments of our own to get badges for being a Young Zoologist/Botanist etc.

Every Children's day and National day you either got pins or pens with 'Happy Children's Day 1993' or useless plastic files with 'Happy National Day 1994'.

You wore BM2000, BATA, or Pallas shoes.

Your form teacher taught you Maths, Science and English.

You went to school in slippers and a raincoat when it rained, and you find a dry spot in the schoolto sit down, dry your feet, and wear your dry and warm socks and shoes.

There would be spelling tests and mental sums to do almost everyday (you hated them).Your friends considered you lucky and rich if your parents gave you $2 or more for pocket mone everyday.

You saw Wee Kim Wee's face in the school hall.

Boys liked catching fighting spiders, earthworms or tadpoles.

Collecting and battling erasers was a pastime for boys.

Class monitors and prefects loved to say, "You talk somemore, I write your name ah!"

You got booked for muddy shoes in class.

There were at least 40 people in one class.

You brought every single book to school, even though there was a timetable.

There was a pro-yo/bumblebee, digimon craze at some point in time.

What can I say?

My my, you guys seem to have plenty of interesting things to say. The reason I've been so quiet lately is I can't think of anything really worth blogging about yet la.

On LCC, well, cut him some slack la. I mean, it doesn't really hurt anybody right? Yea I know you feel a bit cheated, but I guess it hasn't come to a major issue right?

It's amazing isn't it? Thousands of miles apart and we can still have such an impact on each other. Thus is the boon and bane of modern technology.

I'll try to think of something more interesting to say sometime. Right now my head is filled with financy stuff and music and stuff about New York. But I can't seem to put all that down such that it's blogworthy!

kana saboed...

looks like varun's having an interesting time...

on my side. well, go read my blog lah... its damn long and i had some trouble with the formatting.. but it covers what i did the past couple of days... climbed a mountain and attended a talk by an Israeli Harvard uni Lecturer on happiness and Appreciative Inquiry.

in other news.. .finished reading State of Fear by Micheal Crighton. Since his book is based on scientific journals and stuff, i got to admit i learned something from reading it. don't believe what the media and govts are telling you about the climate. not saying to believe a fictional book either. but really, i think its best to form our opinions only after we've read the research materials ourselvs and can trust that its not been... .influenced. to putit mildly. very interesting book about the climate in crisis... kinda says that it isn't really. at least, not as urgent as we put it. and the underlying reason for all this is really a way of keeping society in control... by creating this State of Fear... the logic is sound.

like during the cold war it was the nuclear winter and communism.. then in 1989, coincidentally, after the fall of the berlin wall, its about the climate... and then health and obesity... fear of these things really keeps some industry, not to mention the political spectrum as well, alive and rich... again, to put it mildly.

still, as much as i feared the book just talking about climate only, there was a fair amount of action, storytelling and chracter development. thought the main character goes thorough the most changes, his changes seems to take place a bit more abrubtly. maybe it was a typo. instead of meaning to change over a period of time from Incident A and B... the book states he changed from Incident A. although as you read it from A to B, he's segments don't really show the change in him. but he does as he goes through the middle and 3rd part of the book.

okok... storytelling. maybe its boring you.

********************************************************

let me get right to my topic... Weishan msged me this morning, haven't talked to her in a while and she misses me blah blah.. on top of that, knn, she asked me how late cock chua knows about her and AL... i replied to her, i figure chua's put 2 and 2 together when i talked about being at her place so often as well as hanging out with Austin just as much.... according to her, that stupid goondu went and asked austin about it. about him and her....

stupid cockster. told him to keep his mouth shut.. and at least approach her from a I don't know anything point of view which means not to mention it unless he's told by one of them or sees them together with his own eyes. .... crap idiot jeapordised the trust i have with both weishan and austin. hmph... ok lah... i'm not really angry but quite peeved off. and yeah.. i should have expected it anyway. still, i was hoping he'd be a bit more tactical in his approach.. i dont' know why he even bothers about their relationship really. even i try not to be too prying about it... let them be lah.. no need to kay po so much right? hmph... okok.. that being said, where's he anyway? he's not one of the contributors to this blog yet.

i want a mushroom cheese prata man... the prata my mum made the other day was not prata at all..... more like sloppy saggy chappatti...

Something proper...

Think I will post something proper. haha, not to say that the videos posted so far was not...

The past week was quite different from my normal routine of doing stuff. For one thing, I had a assignment, an essay about employment relations to hand up on friday. And I only found out about this a week before.

At least I had done some background reading, so forming the essay was like doing a jigsaw, I had the pieces, I knew the picture, it was just a process of putting it together. So I guess that was done fine and the only improvement I saw was to argue my case better as some of the points did not seem to flow very smoothly.

If you want a word to describe employment relations in SG, the word is tripartite. Which means the decision making by the gov, union (NTUC) and employers. So, every single labour thing that the gov says, is not from their own opinions, but from these forums and discussions. Eg. the CPF proposals and extending the retirement age.

On Saturday, there was no troop meeting as the school celebrated founder's day. But the Scout AGM was held at HQ and the DC had asked me to go (they need some ALs there). So I went just to see-see since I was free. I guess the 2 note-worthy things that they talked about for 2006 was that girls could now be scouts and in 2015, they plan to host the world jamboree, at coney island if they win. According to them, we did bid for the 2011 world jam and we came in 2nd, so we stand a good chance.

Today, I went with my family to Desaru. It was just a day-outing. Nothing much happened at Desaru itself, just found some nice pebbles and took a nap on the beach for a short-while. After that we headed back, stopped at a chinese seafood restaurant at JB and did some shopping (just bought A4 paper, ran out, haha!). Overall, I guess the best part was getting to drive. Young people should drive, cos I guess you wont really like doing it when you are older, when you get tired quicker, your eye sight is not as good and you dont have the 'fun' factor as much as when you are younger.

In Civ 4 news, I achieved my first diplomatic victory. For those not in the know, that means getting your rivals to say that you have been such a great friend. I played US and did it the american way, diplomacy with the upper hand. I was the most powerful nation, was friends with the 3rd most powerful, Germany, (if the 2nd most powerful was my friend, he would have voted for himself) and took 3 votes before I could get Xerxes to vote for me. I had to give him some technologies and aluminium(vital modern resource) to get his support. So I guess in real-life we can see this being done by US which is giving civilian nuclear technology to India.

Well, I think I have blogged enough, hope other follows, cheers to those down under and maybe those in SG will meet at the real RK. Going to watch Man VS Wild now, see how he survives in Kenya!

Varun's favourite movie. heh heh

so how's school for everyone?

i'm going to be applying for my unis soon.... probably going to put RMIT first. then JMC and VCA Prod followed by VCA Film and TV. though putting VCA last is just like putting RI as your last choice. elite school that looks at 1st option entries.. surely won't get in one.

RMIT: Bachelor in Communications (Media)

  • Pros: Recognises Ngee Ann. Cheaper. about 5k/year. Fixed 1 and a half year course.
  • Cons: Won't be learning much new things. Equipment is barely standard only. They are not even doing 5.1 Surround Sound. Will not be really specialising in any sound aspect apart from what projects we work on.
  • Conclusion: Doing this course is Cost-Time-Effort the easiest way for me to get a degree.

JMC Academy: Bachelor in Audio Engineering

  • Pros: Private Uni. Facility and Equipment is top notch. Active work experience in the surrounding commercial studios as part of course. May get cut down up to 2 years depending on specific modular arrangement. Really get indepth in understanding protools and sound recording and all the other sound aspects.
  • Cons: Expensive. 13k+/year. Working while studying won't sustain me. Deg just got recognised by Aust Govt. So probably no recognition in Singapore.
  • Conclusion: Most ideal course to learn the exact art of sound. but Cost-Time-Effort doesn't work out coz simply put, we can't afford it unless i haev a larger lump sum already and i'm not going to ask my father. also not being well known in Singapore is a minus point.

VCA production: Bachelor in Production

  • Pros: goes back to my roots on how i started in this industry. very interesting. stage work mostly. life sound recording and broadcast blah blah. seemingly flexible course. VCA is also very well recognised throughout the world. Very hands on.
  • Cons: Elitist intake. no cutting down of years. Small intake, expensive course suggest high quality but its a con for me coz of extra effort needed to get in. Cost/yr uncertain.
  • Conclusion: Probably won't get in lah.

VCA Film and TV: Bachelor in Film and Television

  • Pros: Best deg in australia to get in my line of work. Work is substantial. work on 3 16mm and 3 videos in the 3 year course.
  • Cons: Concentrates more on story telling than on technical work. Elitist intake. no cutting down of years. Small intake, expensive course suggest high quality but its a con for me coz of extra effort needed to get in. Cost/yr uncertain.
  • Conclusion: Probably won't get in anyway... and may not be able to afford it.

Night Trip to RK

Had supper at the usual place again today, took some pics of somethings that Shamir likes.

Eg. Shamir's favourite employee, kerang menu(noone orders it) and the 'real' friends.

It was quite a technical discussion, but I guess thats what happens when you have supper with a Black Mesa employee wanna-be............

See. I'm into guitars and Star Wars, so what better website than this!

OK, so you may not be able to catch every single nuance of the thing if you're not a guitarist but it's still entertaining regardless.
