The guys's name is "Beat" what... so what can you expect? Anyway, it could just be one of those things the newspapers do to try to get readership. Hoax a story. Wouldn't be surprised if that's the case here. Doesn't sound as natural as Terry or the Sharks off Sydney or Sam the Koala.
